Jesse Eisenberg's The Debut to Close the 70th London Film Festival

Jesse Eisenberg returns to the London Film Festival with his new directorial work following A Real Pain. The Debut will be screened at the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank Centre during the festival's special closing gala for its 70th anniversary.

On the night of October 18, Eisenberg is expected to be joined by cast members. BFI will also bring the film to some cities outside London in the UK through simultaneous screenings as part of the festival.

Julianne Moore Begins to Transform with a Small Role

The Debut starts with Mona Friedman, who leads a quiet life, taking a small role in an original musical prepared by a local theater community.

Initially shy and inexperienced, Mona, played by Julianne Moore, gradually becomes more attached to her role. Before long, she transforms into a method actor obsessed with maintaining artistic integrity, facing off against the authoritarian director of the theater production, Jerry.

Jerry, played by Paul Giamatti, is introduced as one of the most respected directors in the amateur theater scene in New Jersey. He pushes Mona to her emotional and creative limits while trying to bring out her talent.

The Cast Includes Highly Experienced Broadway Names

Alongside Eisenberg, Moore, and Giamatti, the film features Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy, and Bonnie Milligan.

The significant portion of the cast composed of actors with stage and musical experience indicates that The Debut will not merely use the theater world as a backdrop. Bailey plays one of the actors who warns Mona about Jerry's working methods, while Eisenberg also appears on screen.

Eisenberg Draws from His Own Theater Background

The Debut's starting point is rooted in Eisenberg's childhood. The director shared that his introduction to amateur theater in 1990 was both a life-changing and frightening experience for him.

Eisenberg stated that he viewed a small locally produced play at that time as an extremely significant and serious matter. He noted that the film draws from this sense of intensity. This personal connection transforms The Debut from a traditional musical set behind the scenes into a story about how art can completely take over an ordinary person's identity.

Back in London After A Real Pain

The Debut is Eisenberg's third feature film that he wrote and directed. He made his transition from acting to directing with When You Finish Saving the World, and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay with his second film, A Real Pain.

A Real Pain was screened at the London Film Festival in 2024. Eisenberg's invitation to the festival's closing night two years later strengthens the positioning of his new film in the year-end awards season.

UK Release Date Announced

The full program for the 70th BFI London Film Festival, which will take place from October 7-18, will be announced on September 2. The screening of The Debut on October 18 will not be its world premiere, but rather its UK premiere.

Lionsgate will release the film in theaters in the UK on January 15, 2027. Thus, the festival's closing gala will take place about three months before the film's commercial release in the UK.
