'Obsession' and 'Backrooms' are breaking box office records and making history. Producers Jason Blum and James Wan note that these films remind them of how young directors entered the horror genre in the 1970s. Both films play a significant role in the recovery process of cinemas post-COVID.

Blum and Wan met with PGA President Stephanie Allain at the Produced By Conference held at Universal Studios to discuss the state of cinema, the future of post-COVID theaters, and their goals for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Blum expressed his concerns, stating, "There’s a sense of lethargy around post-COVID cinema; is this format still valid and will it survive?" However, he emphasized that 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms' represent a new genre of film made by unconventional directors.

'Obsession' was released on May 15 and was written and directed by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker. Made with a budget of $750,000, the film has the distinction of being the first film since 1982 to increase its box office in its second and third weeks, excluding Christmas. On the other hand, 'Backrooms', created by 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons, is set to premiere this weekend and aims for the biggest opening in A24's history.

Blum and Wan also announced that a remake of the Blair Witch Project is in the works, in collaboration with Dylan Clark, a creative who started online. These projects stand out as a testament to how young talents are shaping the film industry.
