The Final Episode of Invincible Made a Major Change in the Comic

Invincible is one of the rare superhero adaptations that not only stays true to its source material but also updates it in surprising ways. The episode "Give Us A Moment," released this week, is a perfect example of this: it includes bloody rematch scenes between Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), as well as alters the reunion scene between his parents, Debbie (Sandra Oh) and Nolan (J.K. Simmons). In the comic, Debbie reaches an agreement with Nolan, while in the series, she rightfully confronts him, creating a truly emotional moment. One of the biggest changes, however, is directed towards another character, Tech Jacket.

Created by Invincible's creator Robert Kirkman and artist E.J. Su, Tech Jacket is the alter ego of a young boy named Zach Thompson, whose life changes forever when he connects with the Tech Jacket armor. Tech Jacket transforms Zach into a living weapon, enabling him to protect the world from supervillains and cosmic threats. Invincible fans first saw Tech Jacket in Season 3's "This Is All My Fault," but "Give Us A Moment" surprised them: Tech Jacket is now voiced by Zoe Thompson and Zoey Deutch. There’s a reason for this change.

Kirkman and Invincible director Simon Racioppa explained to Den of Geek why they decided to change Tech Jacket's gender in "Give Us A Moment." Kirkman mentioned that when he reviewed the comics, he realized that Tech Jacket and Invincible share similar origins: "When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I noticed that if we took him directly from the comic, he would be very similar to Mark. We decided early on that it would be interesting to change this character's gender. We started thinking it would be Zoe instead of Zach. Exciting things come up when you change this character."

Kirkman makes a very valid point because both Invincible and Tech Jacket share the same concept of a young child learning to be a hero while using alien-derived powers. Tech Jacket will come out exactly a year before Invincible and will undeniably shape the concepts that Kirkman will later develop in the second book. This change works because Zoe instantly draws everyone in. Zoey Deutch's performance is filled with hyperactive energy, which we can see in Zoe's fight against Walking Dread and her conversations with her father Dan (Bobby Moynihan). This is also not the first example of Invincible making significant changes to its supporting characters; Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin) is another instance where the series changed a character's gender and benefited from it.

Invincible has now entered what is likely its darkest storyline yet, the Viltrumite War. Mark, Zoe, Nolan, and other allies must fight against the remnants of the Viltrumite Empire, led by the ruthless Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace). "Give Us A Moment" emphasizes how brutal this war will be by showcasing the carnage scenes between Mark and Conquest. However, Zoe's presence may help lighten the atmosphere. She stays close to Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) during the battle and even uses a trick from Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back to outsmart the Viltrumites. This leads to a funny video game discussion, but also highlights the wildness of what fans are watching.
