In the 4th season of Invincible, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) went through a lot. He came close to death twice during the Viltrumite War, went to Hell, killed Rus Livingston (Ben Schwartz) and Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and reunited with his father Nolan (J.K. Simmons). In the season finale titled "Don't Leave Me Hanging Here," Mark returns to Earth with more emotional baggage, but his paranoia increases in the face of a rising threat. While previous finales of Invincible were filled with action and spectacle, the end of season 4 takes a more somber approach.

The season finale begins with Thragg's (Lee Pace) Viltrumite ship hovering over Earth; the Grand Regent sends the remaining Viltrumites to attack a city by creating a tsunami and demolishing buildings. However, it turns out that this is all a nightmare for Mark, and as Nolan tries to talk to him about Thragg, Mark freezes in fear, saying, "We don’t even know if he’s there." Zoe/Tech Jacket (Zoey Deutch) asks about a potential plan for their return to Earth, but Mark and Nolan ignore her. In Talescria, Allen (Seth Rogen) is adjusting to his new role as the leader of the Planet Coalition. Telia (Tatiana Maslany) tries to calm his nerves by telling him that Thaedus (Peter Cullen) believes in him.

At the dinner table, Zoe tries once again to talk to Mark and Nolan, but they are not listening. The silence is broken when the Captain announces they are approaching Earth. While Nolan tries to devise a strategy, Mark flies off to scout his hometown and realizes that everything seems normal. When Mark returns home, his mother Debbie (Sandra Oh) greets him with tears in her eyes. He experiences the illusion that Thragg has killed Oliver (Christian Convery) while talking about him. Mark goes out to check on Eve and tells Debbie that Nolan is outside.

Debbie finds Nolan hanging on the ground and scolds him for allowing Oliver to go to space with him. Although Nolan tries to calm himself by saying he is proud of Mark and Oliver, Debbie is not being moderate. The events that occurred throughout the season have left deep marks on the characters' relationships, and emotional conflicts are emerging.

Unlike the previous outcomes of the series, this finale focuses on the inner worlds of the characters rather than action-packed scenes. Mark's traumas and increasing paranoia, along with the connections he struggles to establish with his family, have significantly altered the dynamics of the series. This emotional depth seems to present the most mature and satisfying finale of the Invincible series.
