'In the Grey' Review: A Run-of-the-Mill Action Film Starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal
The Hollywood Reporter
Guy Ritchie's latest film 'In the Grey' combines complex and straightforward storytelling. The film revolves around a lawyer and a team of mercenaries trying to collect 1 billion dollars from a dark businessman who has defaulted on a loan to a bank. Ritchie presents a production reminiscent of the typical action films featuring stars like Stallone and Schwarzenegger from the 1980s. In fact, Sid and Bronco could have been perfect choices for this duo.
The story is narrated by the ultra-confident lawyer Rachel Wild (Eiza Gonzalez). Rachel convinces investment banker Bobby Sheen (Rosamund Pike) to propose a 10% commission for collecting the money from the debtor Manny Salazar (Carlos Bardem). Throughout this process, Rachel's strong character and ambition in the business world stand out. However, the fact that Manny will not hesitate to kill to achieve his goals complicates matters.
The film gives viewers a sense of having a complex narrative structure by providing ample exposition. While Rachel deals with Manny's lawyer (Fisher Stevens), she also collaborates with former special forces agent Sid. Although Ritchie's style is filled with action-packed scenes, it lacks depth in terms of storytelling and character development.
In conclusion, 'In the Grey' draws attention with its star-studded cast but falls short of delivering a profound story. While Ritchie's new production may serve as entertainment for action lovers, it could disappoint viewers seeking a deeper narrative. The film is set to be released on May 15.
