ABC has announced that long-time stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will be leaving the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy in the season finale on May 7. McKidd has played Owen Hunt since the fifth season, while Raver has brought the character Teddy Altman to life since the sixth season (despite taking a five-year break). Although the simultaneous departure of both actors is a significant development for the show, which continues to thrive in its 22nd season, it makes sense story-wise.

The characters Owen and Teddy are deeply intertwined in the series; these two doctors, who share a child, have had an on-and-off relationship for many years. Initially friends, the characters married in the 18th season but have recently divorced. Officially separated at the start of the season, the couple was considering rekindling their romance in the latest episodes and spending time together. Teddy, the Chief of Cardiac Surgery, also had a vague job offer in Paris on the table.

The penultimate episode of the season aired on Thursday and appears to be setting up a more dramatic outcome. As the couple begins to discuss their future, the episode ends on an unexpected cliffhanger: a voicemail from Owen raises questions about his presence during a bridge collapse. Teddy hears the moments of the bridge's collapse in Owen's voicemail.

Throughout their years on Grey's Anatomy, Owen and Teddy have faced numerous life-and-death experiences. Therefore, a happy ending may still be possible. The show will reveal what kind of departure is in store during the season finale. This finale, prepared by showrunner Meg Marinis, also marks a significant point for McKidd, who has directed nearly 50 episodes.

When announcing his departure, McKidd noted that Grey's Anatomy has been an important part of his life and expressed gratitude for everything he has gained creatively and personally.
