Godzilla Minus Zero will have its world premiere in New York
The location for the first meeting of Godzilla Minus Zero with the audience has been revealed. The film will be showcased at Lincoln Center, as part of the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival, featuring Takashi Yamazaki's new film.
Alongside Yamazaki, cast and crew members are also expected to attend the screening on September 26 at Alice Tully Hall. This screening, part of the festival running from September 25 to October 12, is not just a special showing during the film's promotional tour; it will be the first public screening of Godzilla Minus Zero in the world.
The story will continue in 1949
Godzilla Minus Zero will pick up the story two years after the events of the first film, continuing in 1949.
The sequel will continue to focus on the family of war pilot Koichi Shikishima. The New York Film Festival's announcement noted that the family is facing a new disaster, while details of the story are being kept under wraps for now.
Yamazaki will serve as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor once again. Ryunosuke Kamiki, who portrayed Koichi in the first film, and Minami Hamabe, who played Noriko, will return for the sequel.
Expectations have grown after the Oscar victory
Godzilla Minus One became one of the strongest films in the series in recent years by telling the story of the giant monster through the trauma of post-war Japan and the guilt of the survivors.
The production won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, bringing the first Academy Award in the history of the Godzilla series. Yamazaki also became the first director to win this award with his film's visual effects team after Stanley Kubrick.
New York Film Festival Artistic Director Dennis Lim described the sequel as a production that does not overshadow the human story under the grand production, telling the story of post-war Japan from the characters' perspectives.
Yamazaki will watch the film with a global audience for the first time

In theaters in Turkey on November 6
Godzilla Minus Zero will begin its worldwide cinematic journey approximately five weeks after its premiere in New York.
The film will be released in Japan on November 3. The release date for Turkey, the USA, the UK, Canada, and many European countries has been announced as November 6, 2026.
Thus, the audience in Turkey will be able to watch Godzilla Minus Zero in theaters just three days after its release in Japan. Before that, the first test will be held in New York: Yamazaki's sequel will face real audiences for the first time on the night of September 26.
