GKids has acquired the Studio Ghibli library for the UK and Ireland. This deal encompasses the rights to the Japanese animation studio's archive of 23 films across cinema, home video, television, and digital platforms. GKids will kick off this new agreement on August 21 with an IMAX screening of Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). This film, Hayao Miyazaki's second feature, follows a young witch named Kiki as she moves to the port city of Koriko and starts a flying courier service with her cat, Jiji.

Future Ghibli films planned for IMAX screenings include Hiromasa Yonebayashi's The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) and Yoshifumi Kondō's Whisper of the Heart (1995). GKids aims to release more titles of the new Studio Ghibli 4K Remasters on IMAX and physical media starting in the fall of 2026.

GKids is known as the long-time distributor of Studio Ghibli in North America and handles distribution across all platforms. This agreement for the UK and Ireland was signed with the global sales agency Goodfellas and does not include licensing rights for Netflix. GKids' president David Jesteadt stated, "We promise to take great care of the Ghibli library for our fans in the UK and Ireland."

GKids will work closely with Glasgow-based Anime Limited in the distribution processes for the UK and Ireland. Anime Limited, recently acquired by GKids' Japanese parent company Toho Global, has a history of successful projects as a distributor. GKids and Anime Limited will also handle the distribution of Toho's Godzilla Minus Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki.
