The first official documentary for Gilmore Girls is coming: HBO Max will release unseen footage
A different project is coming, apart from the documentary that Gilmore Girls fans have been waiting for over the past year. This time, the studio behind the series is directly involved.
Warner Bros. and HBO Max announced that they are in the production phase of the first authorized documentary about Gilmore Girls. The film, which has not yet been titled, will explore how the series came to be and how it transformed into a phenomenon that resonates with audiences from different generations years later, through the eyes of its creators and cast.
Lauren Graham and the Palladinos will narrate
The documentary will feature Lauren Graham, who portrays Lorelai Gilmore, along with the series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and producer-writer Daniel Palladino.
Interviews with other cast and crew members, whose identities have not yet been fully disclosed, will also be included. So far, HBO Max has not confirmed the participation of other key figures like Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop, or Scott Patterson.
The film will be directed and produced by the Oscar and Emmy-nominated documentarian Bonni Cohen, known for Athlete A. The production comes from Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and R.J. Cutler's This Machine company.
Warner Bros. archive opens for the first time
One of the biggest advantages that could set the new documentary apart from the previously announced Gilmore Girls project is access to the archives.
The production will utilize previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes, as well as the series' original script pages. The aim is not just to create a nostalgia program where the actors share their memories years later; it is to directly showcase how Gilmore Girls' unique rapid dialogue, the world of Stars Hollow, and the production process were created using archival materials.
It is also significant that Warner Bros. has authorized the project. Access to the studio's original production materials provides a resource pool that an independent retrospective would not have.
But there was already a Gilmore Girls documentary
This is exactly why the announcement caused confusion on social media.
In 2025, a separate Gilmore Girls documentary titled Searching for Stars Hollow was announced, which later took the name Drink Coffee, Talk Fast. This independent production, directed by Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna, is being developed to explore the cultural legacy of the series through new interviews with cast, crew members, and fans.
In that project, interviews were conducted with Gilmore Girls cast members such as Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray, Keiko Agena, Sally Struthers, Liz Torres, and Rose Abdoo. However, it is not an official retrospective authorized by Warner Bros.
Therefore, the film announced today by HBO Max is not a new name or platform agreement for Drink Coffee, Talk Fast. Two separate Gilmore Girls documentaries are in the works.
The initial reactions from the fan community have largely focused on this distinction. In the announcement on the Gilmore Girls Reddit community, hundreds of users engaged, and one of the most upvoted comment threads directly asked, “Is this official documentary different from the film that was already made?”
Gilmore Girls still finds new audiences 20 years later
Gilmore Girls began in 2000 on The WB and ran for seven seasons until 2007. The series, told through Lauren Graham's Lorelai and Alexis Bledel's Rory, reached a new generation of viewers years after its television broadcast ended, thanks to streaming.
This interest led to the production of the four-episode continuation Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which saw Amy Sherman-Palladino return in 2016.
Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino are also working on a separate book that will recount the behind-the-scenes of the series. The book is planned to be published in the fall of 2027.
No title or release date yet
The HBO Max documentary is currently in production. The official title of the project and its release date on the platform have not been announced.
However, an interesting comparison has already emerged before the film is released. On one side is the independent Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, which has been in development for years and carries the perspective of the cast and fans; on the other side is the HBO Max production that includes direct involvement from Warner Bros. archives, the series creators, and Lorelai Gilmore.
So, two different cameras are rolling in Stars Hollow at the same time. However, the first official documentary that will open the door to the series' own archives will be on HBO Max.
