Emilio Insolera: The Voices and Sign Languages of Deaf Actors Need to Be Heard in Cinema
The Hollywood Reporter
Italian actor and producer Emilio Insolera, who appears in the Netflix series Feel My Voice, advocates that deaf actors should not only be seen on screen but also have their voices heard in Hollywood. In Feel My Voice, which premiered on April 4, Insolera plays a deaf father and has previously acted in the Italian adaptation of La Famille Bélier, which was later transformed into the Oscar-winning production CODA. In the series, Insolera showcases his acting while using sign language, and his physical voice is only audible during shouting scenes.
Insolera has had the opportunity to work with major studios such as Universal Pictures, Disney, Paramount Pictures, and 20th Century Fox throughout his acting and directing career, sharing the screen with renowned actors like Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, and Jacob Elordi. As someone who speaks four languages—Spanish, Italian, English, and Japanese—and uses sign language, he expresses that he sees great potential for filmmakers to bring this diversity to the screen.
"Imagine a film character who speaks four sign languages and four spoken languages. This would break the stereotypes associated with deaf individuals. How many stories do we have to share, and what kind of impact would such a character have on the people around them? Would they be seen as a hero, a villain, or perhaps both?" Insolera asks. His main desire is for directors and producers to bring the authentic and genuine voices of deaf actors to the screen.
Insolera emphasizes the need to highlight voices that should be heard in the film industry, stating, "Viewers are already seeing a wide range of sign languages, so they should also see a similar diversity in spoken languages. It is important to embrace this diversity rather than standardize or hide it." He stresses that such representation and inclusivity should acclimate people to these narratives and recognize them as part of natural human variation.
