Dustin Hoffman Reveals How He Landed the Role in "The Graduate"
The Hollywood Reporter
Dustin Hoffman met with fans at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) in the Czech Republic for a special screening of the iconic film "The Graduate." During his speech, Hoffman recalled the famous "Plastics" line from the film, providing the audience with delightful moments. However, the Hollywood legend shared not only this iconic line but also significant anecdotes about his career. Taking the stage to enthusiastic applause in the festival's Grand Hall, Hoffman established a warm connection with the audience.
Hoffman explained how he got the role in "The Graduate." He noted that director Mike Nichols spent two years searching for the right person for the part. Hoffman said, "On the last day, it was my turn and Katharine Ross's turn. If we had been here two years ago, we wouldn't have gotten this role." This fortunate timing became a turning point in his career, and the film has entered cinema history, continuing to inspire audiences for generations.
Hoffman questioned whether the film, released in 1967, is still inspiring for today's youth. He remarked, "Actually, the situation is the same," reminding that the novella by Charles Webb, which the film is based on, was written in 1964. He emphasized that this period was a time before the Vietnam crisis that divided America.
Hoffman also touched on the journey of young people in their 20s to discover who they are. He stated, "In our early 20s, we don't know who we are. We spend years trying to figure out who we are, and I'm still going through that process." He also highlighted the social and societal issues addressed in "The Graduate." He expressed that parents who came out of the Great Depression of the 1930s settled for giving their children objects, which created a lack of love.
On the 60th anniversary of KVIFF and the festival's 80th anniversary, Hoffman was awarded the Crystal Globe for his extraordinary contributions to world cinema. The festival runs from July 3-11 and hosts many famous names.
