Disney+ Brings Namiya General Store Adaptation Starring Ryu Seung-ryong
The Hollywood Reporter
Disney+ has added another new Korean series to its expanding catalog of productions from East Asia. The platform announced the start of principal photography for The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, the Korean adaptation of the masterpiece "Namiya General Store Mucizeleri" by Japanese author Keigo Higashino, published in 2012 and selling over 13 million copies worldwide. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ global platform in 2027.
The original novel tells the story of three small-time criminals who, after escaping a botched robbery, find refuge in a dilapidated grocery store and begin receiving advice from letters written decades ago. The work has been adapted twice before: once in 2017 into a film directed by Ryuichi Hiroki for Japanese cinema, and a Chinese series version that same year featuring Jackie Chan as the compassionate store owner, directed by Han Jie.
Ryu Seung-ryong will portray the elderly store owner character Go Min-joong. This role will mark the actor's third major collaboration with Disney+ following the 2023 superhero thriller series Moving (Disney+'s most successful Korean original) and the currently airing 1970s crime comedy Low Life. The trio of young thieves will be played by rising talents such as Kang You-seok, Park Jung-woo, and Kim Seong-jeong.
The supporting cast is filled with popular Korean drama actors, including Kim Hye-yoon from Lovely Runner, Moon Sang-min from Pavane, and Lee Chae-min from Your Majesty. Special guest appearances from Yum Jung-ah, Yeom Hye-ran, Jung Chae-yeon, and Jang Dong-yoon are also expected.
The series will be directed and written by chief director Park Young-ju, who has directed the crime series Citizen of a Kind in 2024. The production will be carried out by The Lamp, the company behind the cinematic classic A Taxi Driver by Jang Hoon. This project is part of Disney+'s efforts to close the gap with Netflix in the realm of Korean dramas. Recently, the platform has begun to focus more on Korean content by investing in prestigious productions like Made in Korea, starring Hyun Bin and Jung Woo-sung.
