Darth Vader Should Have Recognized His Children at First Sight
Screen Rant
The fact that Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa are Darth Vader's biological children is considered one of the biggest shocks in Star Wars history. Even after many incredible events in the Star Wars films and series, this revelation still surprises viewers. Events like Palpatine's controversial resurrection in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Darth Maul's return in Star Wars: The Clone Wars are just a fraction of what happens in this universe. However, the idea that this malevolent being, who terrorizes the galaxy, has a blood relation to the series' greatest heroes is almost unfathomable.
Over time, Star Wars made this truth more meaningful. Particularly, the prequel trilogy's deep exploration of Anakin's character, showcasing his childhood innocence and the steps leading to his fall to the dark side, made this situation more understandable. Many events, such as the death of Anakin's mother, occurred without his fault. This, combined with Anakin's inability to raise his children, made it even more heartbreaking for viewers.
As Leia and Luke's personalities have emerged more in recent years, this story has taken on an even more tragic tone. As Ahsoka Tano told Luke, the children do indeed resemble their father. However, these similarities also indicate that Darth Vader should have realized much earlier that Luke and Leia were his children. As one Star Wars fan pointed out, Vader should have recognized this truth when he first saw them on screen.
In Darth Vader and Leia's first encounter in A New Hope, Leia bravely stands before Vader, lying and resisting accusations. This scene bears a striking resemblance to Anakin's behavior in The Clone Wars. In Luke and Vader's first confrontation, Luke fights bravely like his father and challenges Vader. This mirrors Anakin's courage against General Grievous in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader's fall to the dark side led not only to the fragmentation of his family but also to significant events like the destruction of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Empire. Seeing how much Luke and Leia resemble Anakin is a fascinating detail for viewers.
