Curry Barker, Director of 'Obsession', Will Write and Direct A24's Texas Chainsaw Massacre Film
The Hollywood Reporter
25-year-old director Curry Barker has achieved great success with the yet-to-be-released film 'Obsession', and A24 is giving him the opportunity to direct and write for the legendary horror franchise Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Barker will write and direct the project, which will be independent of a separate A24 series developed by Glen Powell, Dan Cohen, and JT Mollner.
Barker's rise in Hollywood is happening at a rare pace these days. After starting in YouTube sketch comedy, he released a horror film shot on an $800 budget for free on YouTube, garnering over 2 million views. This success caught Hollywood's attention and opened doors for him.
Last fall, Barker's film 'Obsession', which he led, became one of the biggest sales deals at the Toronto Film Festival. The film was purchased by Focus Features for around $15 million, making it one of the largest independent sales of all time in terms of budget-to-sale price ratio. 'Obsession', which Barker wrote, directed, and edited, tells the story of a young man who wishes for his friend to love him more than anything else, leading to dire consequences. A24 had been among the finalists for 'Obsession' and is now starting a collaboration with the successful director on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre project.
Barker's appointment indicates a desire to breathe new life into the 50-year-old franchise and appeal to a younger audience. Until recently, Barker focused on original concepts and had publicly expressed his love for Texas Chainsaw. While details about the project have yet to be revealed, it can be said that Barker's move follows the path of successful directors like horror auteur Zach Cregger, who is working on Resident Evil at Sony.
