Craig Mazin, Director of Chernobyl and The Last of Us, Finally Completed His 19-Year Passion Project The Sheep Detectives
The Hollywood Reporter
Craig Mazin, known for directing serious productions like Chernobyl and The Last of Us, admits that people might be surprised to see him involved in the stand-up comedy The Sheep Detectives. However, Mazin's roots in comedy run deep, and artists can be multifaceted. The Sheep Detectives, an adaptation of Leonie Swann's novel "Three Bags Full," has been a project Mazin has passionately worked on for nearly twenty years and has finally been released. The film features renowned actors like Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, and Hong Chau, along with voice performances by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein, and Regina Hall.
In an interview on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast, Mazin discussed the long journey of the project. He revealed that he acquired the rights to the book from producer Lindsay Doran 19 years ago, and it took nine years to sort out the rights. He then set up the project at a studio, and the script was written about 10 years ago. The script he wrote essentially reflects the film that was made, with only minor revisions since then. Initially, the studio reacted by saying, "This is not just a silly comedy; there’s much more here," expressing uncertainty about the production.
When discussing his sources of inspiration for the project, Mazin referenced classics like Babe and spoke about his work as a script doctor, as well as his love for competence porn. The artist believes that the third season of The Last of Us will prompt viewers to reconsider their perspectives on earlier times. Mazin commented, "I think this is the film I successfully accomplished. Here’s where I understood that," indicating how much the project has shown his growth as an artist.
It's understandable that finally completing The Sheep Detectives, which he has been working on for two decades, makes Mazin feel a bit nostalgic. The project has become more than just a film; it is the culmination of a long creative journey and marks a significant milestone in Mazin's career.
