Comcast's Sky Acquires ITV's Media and Streaming Businesses
The Hollywood Reporter
It has been officially announced that Comcast's Sky has reached an agreement to acquire ITV, the UK's leading television company, for £1.6 billion ($2.13 billion) to purchase its media and entertainment division. This deal encompasses ITV's network and streaming operations but does not include ITV Studios' production arm.
Under the leadership of CEO Carolyn McCall, ITV revealed in November that discussions with Sky were focused on the company's ad-free TV channels in the UK and the ITVX streaming platform. The planned agreement is expected to make ITV Studios an independent company. This move will further strengthen ITV's production capabilities and create an independent structure.
Sky, under CEO Dana Strong, not only offers pay TV and streaming services in the UK, Ireland, and Italy but is also continuing to grow in telecommunications with services like broadband and mobile phone offerings. Additionally, Sky owns the production arm of Sky Studios, led by Cécile Frot-Coutaz, and is increasing its investment in original content production. Recent projects from Sky Studios include Mary & George starring Julianne Moore, The Tattooist of Auschwitz featuring Harvey Keitel, and The Day of the Jackal with Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch.
ITV Studios stands out as the producer of many popular programs, including Love Island, Britain's Got Talent, and Harlan Coben's Netflix hit series Fool Me Once. This company has been the subject of separate deal discussions following mega-merger news among production giants like Banijay and All3Media. These developments are seen as harbingers of significant changes in the industry.
