The Golden Globes and Artemis Rising Foundation are returning as partners for the second year of the Golden Globes Documentary Award at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Actor and producer Kelvin Harrison Jr. will be on the jury and present this award, which emphasizes "impactful documentary storytelling." The award is designed to honor a producer who demonstrates outstanding storytelling and meaningful contributions in documentary filmmaking that addresses "sudden global and social issues."
Kelvin Harrison Jr. represents "a new generation of talent deeply committed to culturally and socially relevant storytelling." His recent and upcoming works include voicing Taka in Mufasa: The Lion King, portraying Jean-Michel Basquiat in Samo Lives, and starring in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which will be released this fall. Harrison Jr. stated, "I am honored to support this important award and celebrate the extraordinary documentary filmmakers shining a light on urgent stories worldwide."
The nominees for the award consist of producers whose films are part of the Official Selection, side events, or special screenings of the 79th Cannes Film Festival and who demonstrate a continued commitment to documentary filmmaking. The jury will consider Steven Soderbergh, Pegah Ahangarani, Ron Howard, Christophe Dimitri Réveille, David Tryhorn & Ben Nicholas, Gessica Généus, Diego Luna, Alexander Murphy, and Leah Nelson.
Launched last year, this award has been presented at major international festivals like Cannes and Venice, highlighting the joint commitment of the Golden Globes and Artemis Rising Foundation to elevate documentary storytelling on a global scale. The award was received by Eugene Jarecki (The Six Billion Dollar Man) at the 78th Cannes Film Festival and won by Ross McElwee (Remake) at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.
The Cannes 2026 jury consists of Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne, producer and Artemis Rising Foundation founder Regina K. Scully, producer and Impact Partners co-founder Geralyn White Dreyfous, and Think-Film Impact Production founder and CEO Danielle Turkov Wilson. Hoehne said, "We are proud to honor an extraordinary documentary filmmaker at Cannes and are excited to have Kelvin join our jury this year," while Dreyfous added, "We hope this award will highlight the best non-documentary storytelling and increase its significance."
