While Apple TV is known for its prestigious dramas like Severance and Silo, the platform also boasts successful comedies. Among productions like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, Trying, which has garnered critical acclaim yet remains lesser-known, is finally returning for its 5th season. The new season will premiere on July 8 and new episodes will be released weekly until August 26.
Airing since 2020, Trying tells the story of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) on their journey to adoption. The couple, unable to have children, initially faces challenges in the adoption process and navigates the chaos surrounding them. Now, with two children named Tyler (Cooper Turner) and Princess (Scarlett Rayner), the couple is confronted with unexpected turmoil brought by Princess and Tyler's biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), who emerged at the end of last season.
After nearly two years of waiting, Apple TV has revealed details about Season 5 of Trying. Nikki and Jason will continue to grapple with the challenges of parenting under complex circumstances. Kat will upend the lives the couple has been trying to build for six years and create mixed emotions for their children. However, the couple has weathered many storms before and has a strong support system around them.
The series features award-winning actors such as Darren Boyd, Siân Brooke, Celia Imrie, Phil Davis, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Colin Morgan. Created by Andy Wolton and co-produced by Apple TV and BBC, Trying has been praised as one of the platform's best and most watchable series since its debut. With a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show received higher ratings in Season 4 despite bold changes made through time jumps.
Collider critic Tania Hussain rated Season 4 a 9/10, stating, "The series will keep viewers glued to their screens and will make them curious about what’s to come in a production that deserves more attention as one of Apple TV+'s best series." The same team has returned to maintain the good vibes. BAFTA Award nominees Josh Cole and Sam Pinnell will work with Wolton as executive producers. International Emmy Award winner Chris Sussman and stars Smith and Spall round out the team.
