Peter Friedlander, the global TV head of Amazon MGM Studios, announced the second major reorganization of the year. The new structure aims to create genre-based teams for development and existing programming. As part of this, Jen Chambers, Michael McDonald, and Odetta Watkins will be leaving Amazon. Kara Smith has been promoted to head the drama department. Friedlander stated in an internal memo sent to The Hollywood Reporter, "I have adopted a clarity and speed-first approach to foster creativity."
These changes will establish a new creative leadership structure for scripted television in drama, comedy, and young adult (YA). In the major TV reorganization scheduled for January 2026, Smith, McDonald, and Chambers were tasked with overseeing comedy, drama, and YA programming. This new structure is seen as a step towards determining the new head of the drama department, reporting to Friedlander.
After joining Amazon MGM Studios in October 2025, Friedlander began efforts to align the global TV structure with other studios. It is known that these studios have organized their development and existing teams by genre. With the new leadership structure, new heads for comedy and young adult programs are also planned to be appointed.
Friedlander shared an important update on the evolution of the television organization, stating, "I have adopted a clarity and speed-first approach to foster creativity." These innovations aim to enable Amazon MGM Studios to pursue a more effective and creative path in content production.
