Starz's new historical drama Amadeus presents the inevitable question of the failures of biographical adaptations of artistic geniuses in a flipped manner. The series is structured as a confession from the good composer Antonio Salieri (Paul Bettany), who is doomed to live in the shadow of the prodigious composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Will Sharpe). Even if he cannot approach Mozart's immortal superiority, understanding how maddening this failure can be adds excitement to the series itself.

Created by Joe Barton and based on Peter Shaffer's 1979 play, Amadeus is an inspiration from history, similar to the 1984 film by Milos Forman. However, it achieves what many rushed adaptations fail to do: it turns the story into a complete and whole work on its own. The series successfully brings the depth of cinema and stage to the screen through Peter Shaffer's play.

The series progresses with an elderly Salieri (the character presented with Bettany's realistic aging makeup) recounting past events through secret encounters and reminiscent scenes in the autumn of 1824. Through Mozart's wife Constanze (Gabrielle Creevy) and other characters around him, the layers of the relationship between the two musicians are revealed. The cast's strong performances deeply explore the dynamics of genius and jealousy.

The series stands out with the fundamental task that every adaptation must achieve: while respectfully addressing the original subject, it provides a new perspective. The conflicting architecture of Bettany and Sharpe strikingly reflects the psychological tension underlying the world of music. The writing successfully harmonizes historical texture and emotional depth.

Amadeus problematizes the gap between the incomprehensibility of genius and the limited possibilities of humanity. The story told from Salieri's perspective confronts the audience with the thought-provoking aspects of music and art history. The series will premiere on Starz on May 8, showcasing the complex dance of art, jealousy, and ambition.
