Air Bud Returns to Theaters After 29 Years

Jul 28, 20265 min read

One of the most extraordinary athletes in cinema history is stepping back onto the field.

The golden retriever Buddy, who became a beloved family film icon in the 1990s with his basketball talent, is preparing to return to theaters with Air Bud Returns. The released first trailer shows the new Buddy scoring baskets by outpacing his rivals and joining Jacob's team with his sneakers and blue jersey.

The new film will be the first installment released in theaters since the series' Air Bud: Golden Receiver debuted in 1998. Although many films centered around Air Bud and his puppies have been made over the past 29 years, they were all directly prepared for home viewing.

The Old Air Bud Film Within the New Story

Air Bud Returns will not only retell the story of the first film with today's actors. The production takes a more unconventional approach by placing the original Air Bud within the backstory of the new narrative and a family's legacy.

The film centers on Jacob, who moves to Fernfield with his mother after losing his father. The young boy discovers an old VHS tape labeled “Air Bud” among his father's belongings. He also learns that his father played on the same basketball team as Buddy years ago.

Jacob then bonds with a stray golden retriever he finds on the street and names him Buddy. The duo forms a basketball team made up of outcast kids and begins to fight for a spot in a tournament.

This choice sets the new film apart from a classic remake. Buddy from the 1997 film is no longer just a cinematic character remembered by older audiences; in the world of the new story, he is a legendary athlete who shared the court with Jacob's father and is part of the family's history.

The new Buddy is presented not as a direct copy but as a second generation that carries on the legacy he left behind.

The Same Story Passed to a New Generation

There are notable story similarities between the new film and the 1997 Air Bud.

In the original, Josh, who loses his father, meets Buddy after moving to a new city and discovers his extraordinary basketball talent. In Air Bud Returns, Jacob, who also loses his father, forms a bond with another golden retriever after arriving in Fernfield.

However, this time the story does not start from scratch. The revelation that Jacob's father played on the same team as the first Buddy connects the events of the old film to the lives of the new characters.

This structure consciously bridges the gap between the children who watched Air Bud in the 1990s and the new generation that will watch the film today. Cineverse describes the production as a cinematic project that revives the beloved brand for a new generation.

Two Different Dogs Played Buddy

More than 5,000 golden retrievers participated in the nationwide auditions for the new Buddy.

After a long selection process, two dogs named Charlie from Ohio and Summer from California were chosen. Buddy's basketball and action scenes were alternately portrayed by Charlie and Summer, whose abilities complemented each other.

Writer and director Robert Vince stated that they were not just looking for trained dogs that could follow commands; they aimed to find a star with the screen energy, personality, and basketball skills that would make audiences believe in Buddy. Vince explained that they decided to share the role because they couldn't choose between the two dogs.

The trailer highlights Buddy weaving through rival players, scoring from different spots, and energizing the rest of the team. Of course, the unchanging rule of the Air Bud universe is also reiterated: There is no rule prohibiting a dog from playing basketball.

A Veteran of the Series Returns

Robert Vince wrote the screenplay for Air Bud Returns and directed the film.

As one of the producers of the original Air Bud, Vince later worked as a producer, writer, or director on related productions like Air Bud, Air Buddies, and Santa Paws. Thus, the new film was prepared by someone who has been part of the series' nearly 30-year development instead of handing the brand over to an outside team.

Vince does not define Air Bud Returns as an ordinary sequel or remake. In Cineverse's official announcement, the production is described as a reboot of the series for the cinema.

This definition also fits the structure established by the film. Air Bud Returns continues the themes of loss, friendship, and basketball from the first film through a new family, rather than directly following the stories of the old characters.

Who is in the Cast of Air Bud Returns?

The character Jacob is played by Aydin Artis, known for Blue’s Clues & You!.

The cast also includes Tracy Ifeachor as Jacob's mother Jasmine, Edwin Lee Gibson as Jack, and Tyler Labine as Walter. The production is overseen by Robert Vince and Anna McRoberts, who has worked on Air Bud projects for many years.

The first trailer focuses more on Jacob meeting Buddy and the team's rise on the court than on the family drama experienced by the human characters. How Jacob's father's past and connection to the first Buddy will affect the story is yet to be fully revealed.

The New Film is Not a Disney Production

Although the Air Bud series has long been associated with Disney, the new film will not be distributed by Disney.

Air Bud Returns is prepared by Air Bud Entertainment, while distribution in the U.S. is handled by Cineverse. The company positions the production as its first family film to be released in theaters.

Therefore, while the film benefits from the nostalgia of the original productions' Disney era, it is a product of a new and independent distribution process.

When Will Air Bud Returns Be Released?

Air Bud Returns will hit theaters in the U.S. on January 22, 2027. Cineverse's updated release schedule confirms the date.

The release date for the film in Turkey has not yet been announced.

Nearly 30 years after a golden retriever made basketball possible, this time the series brings not only Buddy but also the childhood memories of the generation that grew up watching him back to the court.
