Jonás emerges as an extraordinary character, returning to his hometown years later to work as a stone mason in the film 'Against Nature.' This debut feature by Mexican director Axel Bertha will have its world premiere in the Proxima competition program at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film presents a mysterious story that navigates between the physical and spiritual realms.

Jonás's character draws from the darker aspects of humanity and carries a deep meaning with its theme of the sacred. As noted on the KVIFF website, Jonás interacts with a force that "envelops the landscape, bodies, and time." This situation offers viewers a chance to question the darker sides of human nature. The film moves away from traditional storytelling, focusing instead on sound design and a hypnotic visual style.

Bertha reveals that his film was inspired by a police report in a local newspaper related to a murder. Emphasizing that human history is filled with expansion, the dominance of resources, and violence, the director raises the question, "Does human progress distance us from nature and the world, or bring us closer?" As Jonás confronts his past, he struggles to cope with the challenges of communication.

The film is produced by Mexico-based Domme and Cárcava Cine, along with the U.S.-based Love Song production companies. In addition to Bertha, Fernanda de la Peza is also among the producers. 'Against Nature' promises to offer an impactful experience that prompts viewers to question the darker aspects of humanity and its complex relationship with nature.
