New Film from the Author of After: The Last Sunrise Trailer Released
After series author Anna Todd, who has reached a wide global youth audience, returns to the screen with a new romantic story.
Prime Video has shared the first full trailer for The Last Sunrise, adapted from Todd's novel set to be released in May 2025. The footage shows Ry, who has spent most of her life under the care of her mother and battling a chronic illness, beginning to make her own decisions for the first time thanks to Julián, whom she meets in Mallorca.
However, the film will not just tell a summer love story set on sunny beaches. Ry's deteriorating health, the tension with her mother, and family secrets that have been hidden for years will cause the romantic tale to evolve into a heavier drama.
Ry’s sheltered life changes in Mallorca
The film centers around university student Ry, played by Maia Reficco.
Due to chronic health issues, Ry must live her life carefully and under control. She goes to Mallorca to spend the summer with her mother, played by Eva Longoria. There, she meets Julián, portrayed by Fernando Lindez.
Julián influences Ry not just romantically. He encourages her to go to the beach, meet new people, and engage in experiences she has avoided for years. In the trailer, we see Ry stepping outside the boundaries set by her mother, exploring the island with Julián, and trying for the first time not to base her life around her illness.
Maia Reficco noted that one of the most important aspects of her role was to reveal Ry's hidden sense of small hope, as her character experiences great despair at the beginning of the story.
Family secrets lie behind the summer romance
The first part of the trailer is set against the backdrop of Mallorca's beaches, nightlife, and the growing closeness between Ry and Julián. However, as the footage progresses, it becomes clear that the film's romantic tone gives way to a darker story.
Ry’s worsening health leads her mother to tighten her control over her life. Additionally, the emergence of long-hidden family truths causes Ry to question her relationships with both her mother and her own past.
Fernando Lindez stated that he does not see the film merely as a summer romance. According to the actor, The Last Sunrise tells an emotional story that poses questions about love, loss, and the decisions made when life changes unexpectedly.
First new Anna Todd adaptation after After
The Last Sunrise will be the first new novel adapted for the screen, whether in theaters or digitally, following Anna Todd's five-film After series.
Todd mentioned that working with new characters has been a refreshing experience for her, stating that she will always love the characters from After, but watching Ry and Julián come to life on screen brings a different excitement.
The new film also contains elements familiar from Anna Todd's previous works: an intense romantic relationship, a young woman trying to discover herself, family pressure, and secrets that change the characters' lives.
In contrast, The Last Sunrise does not solely focus on the ups and downs of the relationship. Ry's struggle with chronic illness, her feeling of being left behind in life, and her beginning to make her own decisions transform the film into a more pronounced coming-of-age story.
The novel was turned into a Prime Video film in 15 months
The Last Sunrise novel was released on May 6, 2025. The film will premiere worldwide on Prime Video approximately 15 months after the book's release.
The quick preparation of the adaptation indicates that Prime Video preferred to bring Anna Todd's new story to the screen without a long wait following After.
Todd also revealed that she was involved in the film's production process while writing the novel. The author noted that some changes were made in the film adaptation, and these innovations brought the story's world to life more vibrantly.
No sequel project has been announced for the film yet. Therefore, it cannot be said that The Last Sunrise marks the beginning of a new film series. However, the production will be the first significant test for Prime Video in how it evaluates Anna Todd's works outside of After.
Carlson Young sits in the director's chair
The film is directed by Carlson Young, known for the romantic comedy Upgraded. The screenplay was written by Anna Klassen.
Young stated that she aimed to preserve the essence of the world created by Anna Todd during the adaptation, particularly staying true to the visual atmosphere of Mallorca and the love story between Ry and Julián. According to the director, both characters meet during vulnerable and pivotal moments in their lives.
Anna Todd participated in the project not only as the author of the novel but also as one of the producers of the film. The production team includes Todd, Jennifer Gibgot, Lena Roklin, Andrew Panay, and Brian Pitt.
Eva Longoria plays the mother
Eva Longoria portrays Ry's protective mother in the film.
Longoria stated that while The Last Sunrise may appear to be a beautiful summer romance on the surface, it carries a deeper message about living in the moment, self-discovery, and finding happiness amidst uncertainties.
The relationship between Ry and her mother will also constitute one of the film's main conflicts. The trailer does not clearly reveal how much of the mother's behavior stems from a desire to protect Ry and how much is rooted in the hidden family past.
This ambiguity suggests that the mother-daughter relationship will be at the emotional center of the story, just as much as the romance with Julián.
