The Lord of the Rings' Greatest Character is Once Again Searching for an Actor

One of the biggest questions surrounding the film The Lord of the Rings: Gollum's Hunter has long been whether Viggo Mortensen will return to reprise his role as Aragorn. It made sense for fans to fixate on this topic, as the character is a crucial part of Peter Jackson's original trilogy, and the new film is close enough to that era for people to start making connections. However, speculation can only go so far, and eventually, Andy Serkis openly addressed the quiet topic.
In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for the new animated adaptation of Animal Farm, Serkis officially confirmed that casting announcements would be coming very soon. While it seems likely that Mortensen's former co-stars Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return, it appears that the actor playing Gondor's future King will not be joining them. Serkis stated, "Yes, of course, it's a very secretive topic, but I think an announcement will be made soon. At some point, there will be an announcement." As of this writing, no official announcement has been made, but recently, Wood mentioned on the latest episode of Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast that The White Lotus actor Leo Woodall was in the running for the role.
Serkis also noted that the film is progressing rapidly. When asked about the status of the new Lord of the Rings film, he replied, "To put it briefly, we're very close to the start of filming. We're getting there. Very close and very exciting. We have a fantastic team."
Serkis made another statement regarding the casting situation for Aragorn. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Animal Farm, Serkis addressed the ongoing discussions about Aragorn's role in the film, confirming that the character is indeed in search of a new actor. "I don't know what's out there right now, but I know there's a lot of speculation, but what I can say is: We are looking for someone to fill the role and we are making progress in finding one," he stated.
This much is quite clear. No matter how hopeful fans are in dreaming that Mortensen will return to the role, The Hunt for Gollum has officially decided to move in a different direction. While Serkis did not hint at who the new Aragorn might be, nor did he provide details on how significant the character's role will be, the biggest takeaway is clear: The film is looking for a new actor.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum's Hunter will hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
