The Mad King, which tells the backstory of Game of Thrones that has been discussed for years but not shown in detail on screen, has once again failed to meet the audience.
The Royal Shakespeare Company had announced that the production would definitely start on Saturday, July 25, after the cancellation of the first four previews. However, the performance scheduled for this evening at 7:15 PM at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon was removed from the schedule just a few hours before it was set to begin.
Thus, the number of canceled previews for The Mad King has increased to five.
The cancellation was announced to the audience by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the development was also confirmed by the British theater publication What’s On Stage. According to the report, the information about the cancellation was shared around 4:00 PM local time.
The newly announced start date could not be realized
The preview process for The Mad King was initially planned to start on July 20. However, the first four performances of the production were canceled to allow for the completion of technical and creative preparations.
After the previous cancellations, RSC had informed that time was gained for the team and that the play would be presented to the audience on July 25. Therefore, the latest cancellation means not only the removal of a newly scheduled performance from the calendar but also the failure to realize the compensatory start that the company announced to the public.
In the latest statement from RSC, it was noted that the cancellations were difficult decisions made only after all options were evaluated. While the company apologized to the audience, it announced that ticket holders affected by the cancellations would automatically receive a full refund, including processing fees.
The next preview of The Mad King is planned for Tuesday, July 28. However, the production's repeated failure to meet previously announced start dates has increased uncertainty about whether this performance will take place.
A four-hour epic production is technically challenging
The Mad King has been prepared as a stage show on a much larger scale than an ordinary theater adaptation.
The play lasts approximately four hours and includes a 20-minute intermission. The traditional seating arrangement of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre has been completely changed for the production, transforming the stage into a cross-shaped special structure that surrounds the audience. RSC states that due to this arrangement, each seat in the auditorium offers a different perspective and experience.
The large cast, fight choreography, puppetry and movement designs, along with the special stage layout, make The Mad King one of RSC's most ambitious productions in recent years.
In previous announcements regarding the cancellation of the initial performances, it was also stated that the development of this ambitious structure required more time for the technical team and actors to complete their preparations.
However, despite the additional time given, the cancellation of the July 25 performance indicates that technical or creative issues behind the scenes have not yet been fully resolved.
It tells the story years before Game of Thrones
The Mad King, adapted for the stage by Duncan Macmillan from the works of George R. R. Martin, is directed by Dominic Cooke.
The story takes place years before the main events of Game of Thrones, during the final days of the Targaryen Dynasty. At the center of the production is Aerys II Targaryen's increasing ruthlessness, the grand tournament held at Harrenhal, and the events that lead Westeros into Robert's Rebellion.
Audiences will witness the youth of significant characters from the history of Game of Thrones, including Aerys II Targaryen, Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark, Eddard Stark, Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Elia Martell, and Oberyn Martell.
According to the story summary published by RSC, events begin with a grand feast held before the great tournament at Harrenhal. While the feast continues outside, the Mad King's inner circle, concerned about his bloody reign, is preparing a secret plan against him.
The play is not completely canceled
The five consecutive cancellations do not mean that The Mad King has been completely removed from the schedule.
Sales for the production continue on the Royal Shakespeare Company's ticket page. The play is planned to officially open on August 8, 2026, and then be staged at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre until September 5, 2026. RSC confirmed to What’s On Stage that the opening night on August 8 is still on the calendar.
Previews in theater productions, conducted before critics, are part of the preparation process used to address technical issues and develop the play based on audience reactions. Therefore, while the cancellation of some previews is not unusual, the fact that The Mad King has missed its first five scheduled dates raises questions about whether the production will be ready for its opening.
For now, the Mad King's rise to power in Westeros has been postponed once again, but its debut on the theater stage has also been delayed.
