Don't let the modern setting fool you; the series takes its name from the town where the story unfolds, and its roots go back quite a ways: In 1781, Ichabod Crane faces a formidable enemy during the Civil War and manages to defeat him at great cost. Centuries later, Crane mysteriously awakens from his grave in a cave, trying to adapt to this new world filled with questions. However, he is unaware that the enigmatic enemy he thought he had killed has also been resurrected. The town's sheriff and his young assistant encounter the legendary 'Headless Horseman' after responding to a call at a farm. In connection with these events, Crane, who draws attention in his old battle attire, is taken into custody, but Abbie Mills, unable to remain silent in the face of what she witnesses, approaches the situation differently. Thus begins the struggle between Abbie and Crane as they uncover many secrets from the past and confront the supernatural events initiated by the Headless Horseman.
