A closer look at some of the best modern dystopian sci-fi shows also reveals that nearly all of them are adaptations. While shows like The Last of Us and Fallout are based on video game franchises, others, like Silo, adapt popular book series. Netflix, too, is the streaming home of a comic book adaptation, The Eternaut, which premiered to positive reviews in April 2025. While The Eternaut season 2 is not expected to land on Netflix anytime before 2027, it is hard not to be excited about the show's return after season 1's events. In its early moments, Netflix's The Eternaut seems quite similar to Silo. It begins with an apocalyptic event where a deadly snowfall across the globe kills everyone who comes in contact with it. This forces the survivors to stay indoors, much like the people in Silo's bleak world. Similar to Silo's main characters, the ones in The Eternaut are determined to find the truth, but their internal conflicts lead to disastrous consequences. However, as The Eternaut progresses, it seems to expand its vision beyond realistic post-apocalyptic setups like Silo. It evolves into a story about a complex alien invasion where the overarching extraterrestrial beings carefully establish control over humanity. With each new episode, the Netflix sci-fi show's alien invasion story becomes a hard-hitting metaphor for real-world imperialism and oppression of the masses through fear and manipulation. Before The Eternaut season 1 ends its run, the show even hints at the possibility of interdimensional travel, which adds another layer of intrigue to its sci-fi story. Given how The Eternaut manages to achieve so much in just six episodes of its first installment, it is hard not to believe that its upcoming season 2 will be even more ambitious. Instead of coming off as another portrayal of rehashed sci-fi and post-apocalyptic tropes, The Eternaut attempts to stand among the vast array of similar shows that exist in the genre. Since it will likely explore interdimensional travel in season 2 and even double on its commentary surrounding authoritarian control and collective resistance, it is bound to get so much better. If all goes well for the Netflix sci-fi show in its upcoming installment, it could find its place among some of the best dystopian thrillers of the century and even become as big as Silo, The Last of Us, and Fallout. Heading into season 2, Apple TV's Silo turned more into a political drama that walked through the tension between the higher powers that run Silo 18. Even in season 3, the show is unfolding more of a conspiracy thriller where most of its story beats seem fairly linear. Compared to season 1, both Silo seasons 1 and 2 have been less complex and more straightforward in terms of storytelling. The Eternaut, in contrast, has already hinted at how complex and non-linear its sci-fi storytelling could potentially become after season 1. Even the sheer scale of its alien species and their invasion has been multi-layered. As Netflix has confirmed, The Eternaut will also conclude its run with season 2, suggesting that its next installment will have zero fillers and likely unfold at a quick pace.
